Community Projects

Greensboro Beautiful first sought sponsorship for the development of Gateway Gardens on Lee Street in 2008. The Greensboro Kiwanis Club sponsored two seat blocks in the Children's Garden Book Stage area. This area can be used for plays, book readings, etc. The entire children's garden is based on an ABC theme. The blocks were done by artists Ernest and Lois Rich of Greensboro.

The official opening was in April 2011 and the garden is being completed in phases. Below are a few pictures.

Kiwanis Day One Project

Thanks to all who volunteered Saturday, April 2 for our annual Kiwanis One Day project. This year we teamed up with other Kiwanis clubs in our district to spend a day at McIver Education Center located at 1401Summit Av. We worked with the vocational rehabilitation director to repair a bench, paint the entrance red, and till several small garden areas.

Many THANKS go to Bill Shaw for his efforts in coordinating this project.

Shoe Project at Falkener School

Some of the Kiwanis “Shoe Fitters” at the Falkener School December 3rd are: left to right: Graham Pritchard, Allison Fuqua, Bill Hervey, Bob Sevier and Art MacCord. Others who “shoed” were, Andrea Neese, chair, Bob and Harriet Carlson and Sue Ireland.

Sometimes it just takes two to get the job done. On the left Art MacCord works with the shoelaces while Bob Sevier looks on ready to step in and finish off the fitting.
Good job!

Dictionary Project

Marvin Baugh reported that the Dictionary Project is completed. Over 1300 dictionaries were delivered to all the third grade students in 16 schools. There were 33 Kiwanis volunteers who delivered the dictionaries, and if you ask any one of them, they will tell you what a great experience it was!

SEPTEMBER 18:  Excitement is building for our upcoming 5-K Run to generate funds for expanding our “Shoes for Needy School Kids” program, which is one of our most visible and satisfying programs and one for which there is an increasing need in these hard economic times. I encourage each of you to become involved as sponsor, friend, participant (in either the Run or Walk) or as a volunteer! Our broad Kiwanis participation will certainly increase our visibility in the community on the one hand and help to guarantee the event’s success on the other. If you haven’t signed up for a role as yet, I hope you’ll do so soon!

MAJOR FOUNDATION GRANT AWARDED

Bob Hood, chair of the Foundation Allocations Committee, and Bob Sevier, president, present Nancy Calkins with a $15,000 check from the club. The Energy Factory is the Kiwanis Foundation's major project for this year and will allow young people to visit a room full of fun and motivating exercise equipment designed for kids.

Calkins, VP of financial development for the YMCA and a member of the club, accepted the Kiwanis grant on behalf of the Energy Factory, a new youth fitness center planned for the Bryan YMCA. Work on the Energy Factory will begin in mid-April, with plans to open before summer vacation.

The youth fitness center will recognize our Kiwanis Club and honor the late Dr. John R. Bumgarner, a Kiwanian and cardiologist who exercised at the Y almost every day until he was 93.
